Abstract

Background. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common chronic arrhythmia among older adults. Etiology of AF is unknown exactly. Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is one of the most common reasons of AF. Prior studies suggest that sometimes changes of platelet phospholipid fatty acid levels can have proarithmic effects, but little is known about the association of platelets phospholipid membranes fatty acid spectrum and AF pathogenesis and risk factors. Methods. Platelets phospholipid membranes fatty acid spectrum was detected in coronary heart disease and paroxysmal AF patients and in patients with coronary heart disease without AF. 65 patients were investigated by gas- chromatography method. All patients were divided into three groups: 1 group ? 21 patients with IHD, 2 group ? 37 patients with IHD and paroxysmal AF, control group ? 7 healthy people. Results. Relatively healthy people platelets phospholipid membranes fatty acid spectrum characterized by lack of myristic, pentadekanic, margarinic and linolenic fatty acids. In patients with IHD combined with AF compared with IHD without AF patients observed significant reduction in the relative content of myristic and palmitic fatty acids and a significant increase in the relative content of oleic, linoleic and arachidonic fatty acid platelets phospholipid membranes. Conclusions. These dates may indicate that changes of platelet phospholipid fatty acid spectrum can be possible pathogenetic link in the development of AF. These dates will be important in the further investigation of AF development
