Abstract

The phenomenon of a shift in the language usage at Madura Island, especially in the district of Sumenep worrying increasingly. Based on the phenomenon, this study aimed to describe the shift in the use of Madurese language which focuses on changes of its function and role and also the factors that cause a shift in daily interactions among children of state elementary schools at Pangarangan village¸Sumenep. This study is a descriptive survey using questionnaires and interviews. To measure the indicators of the level of the language usage shifting among elementary school children, the data analysis focused on four main situations which become the domain of language usage inside and outside the school environment, namely (1) the social sphere of interactional situations outside the classroom, (2) the social sphere interactional situation inside the classroom, (3) the social sphere of interactional situation inside the school environment, and (4) the social sphere of interactional situation outside the school environment. The sample consisted of 221 respondents representing four primary schools at Pangarangan village in Sumenep district. The research shows that there has been a shift in the use of Madurese language in four main domains situation among elementary school children at Pangarangan village, Sumenep, in the amount of 0.47; 0.45; 0.5 .; and 0.53. Based on those results it can be concluded that primary school children at Pangarangan village, prefers to use two languages equally between Madurese and Indonesian, since, they feel that it is more comfortable to use both Madurese and Indonesian. The research results provide information that the position and function of Madurese is having a shift. Madurese has no longer serves as the primary means of communication in the public elementary school children at Pangarangan village in the district of Sumenep. Madurese in accordance with its function as a language also no longer serve as a means to express the users’ feelings, thoughts or ideas. Therefore, it is necessary to have efforts to reduce the rate of this shift in order to remain sustainable Madurese language.
