Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the effect of changing the Size of Shots used in shot peening process on the productivity of the manufacturing of coiled springs. The manufacturing process of Coiled spring involves various processes including short pee ning. In this process the entire surface of the spring is exposed to a barrage of tiny steel balls that hammer it and smooth and compress the steel that lies just below the surface. This process strengthens the steel to resist metal fatigue and cracking du ring its lifetime of repeated flexing. The variation of the Peening time with the variations of size of shots is observed. It has been found that with the adjustment of the proper size of shots for the shot blasting process the manufacturing time can be re duced by 7 to 8 minutes. Also increasing the Diameter of the Shots, the surface area increases and thus less numbers of shots are required for the peening as more surface area is offered.
