Abstract
An increase was observed in the use of externally pressurised gas bearings in different fields of engineering in the last fifty years. In parallel to this common usage the design parameters and the modelling have also been improved. However, some problems of design remained unsolved. One of them is fractional speed whirl of shafts supported by gas bearings. In this research the self excited vibration of fractional speed whirl of a shaft supported by externally pressurised gas bearings is studied theoretically. Analyses are performed and for incompressible and compressible flows theory. In this study the relation between the feed the parameters and the system performance is searched. The results show that stiffness and damping factors are the important parameters controlling the dynamic behaviour of the system.
