Analgesic effect of Ajamodadi Vati (Ayurvedic Formulation) in Osteoarthritis

Abstract
Background: Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata) formerly labeled as 'degenerative joint disease' is grouped under Vata Vyadhi (diseases arising due to humor Vata) in Ayurveda. Predominantly ageing influences the situation with Vata, Kapha as the primary Dosha (humor) involved in the pathogenesis along with Sleshmadhara Kala (mucous membrane of the joint). Aim: To evaluate the analgesic effect of Ajamodadi Vati (Ayurveda formulation) in Sandhigata Vata. Materials & Methods: 30 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were undertaken in the study for the duration of 30 days. The trial drug was administered at a dose of 3 gm /day. Results: The trial drug showed statistically highly significant results in alleviating the complaints assessed through subjective & objective parameters except in Swelling. Conclusion: The result suggested that the trial drug Ajamodadi Vati indeed exhibited good analgesic effect against pain developed due to osteoarthritis .
