Abstract
The present research paper aims at to depict the sufferings of African-American women and their journey from that bondage of sufferings to freedom in the Alice Walker’s novel Meridian. On the way to establish their own identity in a world which is not supported to their own, they have to face the crises, sufferings and difficulties but at last they achieve physical, mental and economic freedom. Meridian shows the subjugation of a woman to oppression and exploitation, denial and dispossession at the hands of a man in her family, community and in thelargest racist world is only a part of complex story of the black woman’s sufferings as well as her heroic struggle to break or transcend the shackles of her bondage and to move towards liberation, expansion and regeneration of herself.
