Abstract
Serum selenium levels were assessed in 80 patients with irritated bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronical catarrhal colitis (CCC). In 78% of IBS and CCC marked selenium insufficiency was noticed; relatively better selenium supply has been revealed in patients with IBS in comparison to CCC and also in patients with normal and excess body weigh+t and aged below 60 years. Administration of selenium enriched food supplement Spirulina Sochi Selen daily for one month led to significant increase of selenium blood serum level and the number of patients with selenium insufficiency nearly halved, although optimal selenium supply level was achieved only in single persons. Said food supplement intake improved therapy efficiency both in IBS and CCC and had well clinical tolerability.
