Abstract

The present research aims at scrutinizing Mulkraj Anand’s novel Untouchable (1935) for the exploration of the themes of poverty, hunger and exploitation. He focused his attention on the sufferings, misery and wretchedness of the poor as a result of the exploitation of the downtrodden class of the Indian society. The class discrimination on the basis of birth, which gives some castes undue advantage over other castes, can be called social exploitation. Untouchable is an inner conflict of an individual who is caught in the web of an age old caste system. The novel describes a single day in the life of the protagonist Bakha, a scavenger boy. The entire action takes place within a period of less than twenty four hours.
