Abstract

Energy conservation is the most concerned and challenging field for the engineers of 21st century. This project is also based on the conservation of energy in the high rise and skyscrapers and we are mostly concerned with the conservation of mechanical energy and further its conversion into electrical energy by using water flowing through pipes. Water is one of the most basic yet necessary resources required in day to day purposes. According to a study average water usage per person per day in India is about 100 to 140 liters. Today’s era is of multistoried buildings and high rise. These multistoried buildings generally have water storage tanks at the top and hence providing huge amount of head to the water. When anyone opens the tap in their respective bathrooms on any floor of the high rise this large amount of potential energy of the water in the form of static head which depends on the height of the tank is converted into kinetic energy depending on the pipe’s geometric parameters and is utilized by the user. By using a suitable design of a turbine fixed in the path of this flowing water the kinetic energy can be utilized. The shaft of the turbine can be joined to a generator to produce electricity. Otherwise the kinetic energy can be utilized directly to run utility devices like exhaust fan or for any other similar application. Through this project we propose to extract kinetic energy from water which is latent and utilizing it optimally to run an exhaust fan by using a turbine and hence conserving the mechanical energy.
