LIS Education in India ? An Overview

Abstract
Emerging from the day of initiating, LIS education movement in the country by Sayyaji Rao Gaekwad, the then Maharaja of the erstwhile princely State of Baroda, the LIS education has grown by leaps and bounds to emerge as an important discipline in modern India. The dawn of the 21st century further provided ample opportunities as well as challenges to the LIS procedures and processes. In the wake of ever changing dynamic environment, the LIS education has to be overhauled in order to face the challenges and convert the weaknesses into strengths and threats into opportunities. The present article examines the growth of LIS education and its modernisation and transformation into a modern discipline and the challenges to be faced in the 21st century. This also suggests the necessary changes in the curriculum in order to cope up with the future demands of the society.
