Many activities of metal ions in biology have stimulated the development of metal-based therapeutics. In metal complexes metal centers, being positively charged, are favored to bind to negatively charged biomolecules; the constituents of proteins and nucleic acids offer excellent ligands for binding to metal ions. The pharmaceutical use of metal complexes therefore has excellent potential.
