Abstract
Pay for performance has emerged as an expedient for popularizing health programs among the people as also for motivating the healthcare providers/ health workers to implement these programs efficiently and effectively. Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSY) is a safe motherhood scheme of the Government of India to encourage institutional deliveries in the country with the objective of bringing down maternal and infant mortality. The Government of Haryana further introduced Jacha- bacha (mother and child) scheme in the state in 2008 to further encourage institutional deliveries in the state. This article analyzes the findings regarding implementation of JSY and Jacha- bacha schemes in a sub- center in district Mewat, which is the most backward district of Haryana, located adjacent to Delhi. The analysis draws upon extensive literature on theories of motivation and experience of implementation of pay for performance schemes in different parts of the world.
