Abstract
Banks are to be considered not merely as dealers in money but also the leaders in development. The resent study reviews the strengths and weakness of the private banks, suggested several measures to transform the Indian Banking Sector from a highly regulated to a more market oriented system and to enable it to compete efficiently in an increasingly globalized environment. For the present study six sample banks were taken from the universe (Private Banks in India) for 2000?2009. The results of the study showed that private banks are on rapid growth in all respects. Overview of Banking in India indicates that profit generation with respect to its human resource was highest in foreign banks followed by Indian Private Banks. However, during recent years, remarkable developments in different performance indicators have been registered. On the whole, the private banks in India, which includes both Indian private banks and foreign banks operating in India are efficient enough but few private banks which are comparatively less efficient need to be more strategic for surviving in highly competitive Indian Banking Industry.
