Abstract

Sustainability has been defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability offuture generations to meet their needs. A comprehensive review ofdifferent methodologies was carried out to identify strengths and weaknesses of existing measures of sustainability. After the sustainability index was developed, there was a need for classification of the indices so that ranking can be done. The indices were classified into five classes on the basis of a -distribution. In both 2005?06 and 2010?11, higher sustainability state, however, stagnation in sustainability during the lastfew years was mainly because ofthe decline in the access component. Punjab was having higher availability in 2010?11. There has been a significant improvement in the availability offood in Punjab from 199091 to 2010?11. The main reason for the ups and downs was that most of the variables which were taken to measure access were having negative relation with access component and sustainability. Utilization was stagnating in one decade and in another it is improving.
