Abstract

A morpheme in a language may combine with other morphemes or helping words and may acquire a different function by gathering different characteristics belonging to each morpheme. Morphemes may have different meanings when used in simple conjugations and different meanings when used in compound structures. For instance, while the suffix {-(y)AcAk} has the meaning of future tense in the sentence “Gireceğim sınav çok önemli (The test I will take is very important.)”, it has the meaning of past tense in the sentence “Bana geleceğine otele gitseydin. (You should have gone to the hotel instead of coming to me.)” Such characteristics can be seen in other Turkic literary languages. For example, in Karaim, while the suffix {-GAy} used in simple conjugation means optative, it can be translated into Turkish with the meaning of future tense in compound conjugations. What we will investigate in this paper are the situations in which {F-mIş/- (I)yor olabil-}, showing possibility/prediction is nominalized or relativized. The question of the study is what meaning is added to the structure “gel-miş olabileceği”, “gel-iyor olabileceği” through the suffix {-(y)AcAk}. To this end, each and every morpheme in this structure is evaluated separately. Then, the function and meaning of the suffix {-(y)AcAk} is evaluated.
