Implications of an urbanising village-A study of fringe village of Punjab

The study revealed that a large majority (87 per cent) sold their land due to increase in price of land, fear of acquisition of land by Government and motivation of colonizser. Expansion of city, will to purchase more land, urge for big money were major factors responsible for promotion of urbanization. Data showed a notable shift in occupation in the process of urbanization. Agriculture has not remained profitable hence they sold their land. On the issue of displacement majority of the respondents told that it was a big problem of settlement at new places coupled with other problems like loss of money and inadequate security. Breakage of joint family system, change in role of women, loss of work culture, increased rate of depression and drug abuse were some of the other major implications of the urbanisation. Arrangements for the displaced persons and training programmes to adjust the people in new ventures were some of the suggestions given by the respondents.
