Abstract
In his last and most enigmatic book Finnegans Wake Joyce extensively uses literary, biblical and mythological allusions, making the book multilayered, suggestive and open to interpretation. The present article studies allusions to Lewis Carroll in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. The article argues that Joyce was particularly interested in Lewis Carroll both as a writer and a person. Carroll’s innovative writing techniques intrigued Joyce as much as his personality. One of the themes of Finnegans Wake is an attempt of the father-figure to tempt the daughter and Lewis Carroll and his child-friends seemed to Joyce to fit in with the paradigm. The article studies the allusions to Lewis Carroll and his works from these two perspectives.
