Abstract
The issue of the article is conducting a comparative analysis of “marginal” personality in the literature of the XX century using as an example central characters of three works of American literature of the XX century, as this particular literature involves the counterculture problematics. The object of this study are central characters of the novels “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” by Ken Kesey, “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes and “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk. The main focus is on the character of “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk. The comparative analysis of the counterculture characters exemplified by the novels named above is performed for the first time, which gives the opportunity to investigate the counterculture manifestation from a new viewpoint, reveal similarities and differences of characters and synthetize these traits in order to constitute a rough definition of a counterculture character
