Abstract
The motive of self-immolation in Aleksey Tolstoy’s novel seems ambiguous and needs to be explained. The author of this article examines a huge number of historical documents, Old Believers discussions. He also analyses arguments given for and against self-immolation, taking into account historical context of Tolstoy’s novel.
