Abstract
The lecture is devoted to the analysis of theoretical and methodological background Russian histori- an’s research in the first half of the1990s. This period characterized by a profound crisis in national historiog- raphy. One of the reasons was Marxist-Leninist methodology criticism at the end of the 1980s. The crisis of the previous methodology provided a background for scientific pluralism in Russian historiography. The article de- scribes three basic methodological approaches, which attracted Russian historian’s attention in the first half of the1990s: formational, representatives of this approachstarted a reformation of their methodological tools, popu- lar in this period civilizational approach and the progressive theory of modernization
