Abstract
Abstract A basic understanding of rice physiology is essential to the success of remote sensing applications in rice-based agricultural systems. This knowledge can play a critical role in the planning stages of a remote sensing project (e.g., identifying optimum acquisition dates for the purchase of imagery) as well as in the final stages of analysis .The growing cycle of rice can be separated into two stages with respect to most analyses of remotely sensed data: vegetative and reproductive The vegetative stage includes the part of the growth cycle where the plant develops and grows, starting after sowing and ending when the plants start to reproduce. This stage is characterized by a steady increase in plant height and biomass. The reproductive stage starts when the plant stops growing taller and ends after maturity and includes panicle and grain development. It may be beneficial at times to further split the reproductive stage into two categories: reproductive pre-heading and reproductive post heading. Reproductive pre-heading defines the period from panicle primordial initiation to heading and post-heading refers to the period from heading to maturity
