Abstract
The aim of the article is to present the goal of carrying out the sentence of imprisonment from the point of view of social adaptation and reintegration of the offender. In the analysis of the objectives of punishment and its essence, the author pointed out that the execution of the imprisonment sentence cannot be confined solely to the functions of insulation and social retribution and deterrence from committing crimes. The author concludes that the purpose of imprisonment, above all, should be to reintegrate people who committed criminal acts and to create the possibility of re-implementation of their own life tasks for them in a socially acceptable way.
