Abstract
The results obtained during 45 years of research conducted through field experiments of 3000 harvests from different sugarcane ecosystems in Cuba, showed that nitrogen requirements are associated with the strain type, the crop yield that can be achieved with fertilization and the characteristics of the soil characteristics such as hydromorphism and compression, and the percentage of organic matter which is an effective indicator for diagnosing the content of nitrogen that is present in the soil. With these basics, the authors recommended the use of nitrogen fertilizers in sugar cane. This becomes an achievement and an extremely useful tool for sugarcane producers as the results can be obtained without harming the environment, which is in line with the principles of sustainable agriculture, that is to say, applying the necessary amount of nitrogen fertilizer to obtain an optimal yield and preserve the ecosystem.
