Abstract
The article explores web-services, social networks and microblogging as a tool for active English learning and provides the analyses of how microblogging can be used to learn specific aspects of foreign language and teach sociolinguistic competence. The paper rises the issue of focusing the process of education on creating conditions for development of a student’s ability of to express oneself fluently in a foreign language in specific situations that is getting a vital skill in the changing modern world today. It will help compensate the lack of real language environment and will create the basis for forming a secondary linguistic identity. The examples of applying active language learning through web-services that can enhance socio-cultural competence are shown in the article.
