Abstract

ABSTRACT An expert system (ES) is a computer program that represents and reasons with knowledge of some specialist subject with a view to solving problems or giving advice. ES is a combination of knowledge base and inference engine. For designing expert system large amount of knowledge is required, which can be captured from human expert. A common inference engine is used which is based on representing knowledge in a rule base. Each rule is represented in if-then format like if X then Y. The set X is called the conditions and the set Y the consequents. A rule is triggered if all the conditions are satisfied and then the consequents are fired. Students’ academic performance is reduced due to improper selection of course, which may result in failure in examination, and hence student’s dropout ratio is increasing. Some reasons of these problems are inability to assess interested field, lack of proper guidance, inability to make proper decision, less number of counsellors, students select their career unwillingly, without systematic process and hence career selection plays major role in student’s life. Researcher designed expert system for career selection which will eliminate few traditional problems and helps students to select their career stream in systematic manner. This paper attempts to provide theoretical framework of expert system for career selection. The proposed framework is implemented for design and development of an expert system for career selection.
