Abstract

Ruptured sinus of valsalva aneurysm (RSOV) is a relatively rare anomaly. Recent advances in evaluation techniques have resulted in diagnosing more cases of RSOV. When diagnosed early and surgically corrected, they have a very low surgical risk and carries an excellent long term prognosis. We report a series of 10 cases admitted between January 2009 and April 2012. Their mean age at presentation was 33.8 years (18-65 years), with male preponderance in the ratio of 41. Rupture of sinus into Right atrium was the most common in our series (6 cases) followed by right ventricle (3 cases) and one case into Left ventricle. Various associations have been described in literature. In our series, one case was associated with sub pulmonic VSD, one case with bicuspid aortic valve with severe aortic stenosis, and another with tricuspid valve infective endocarditis. Majority of cases presented with clinical symptoms suggestive of heart failure. Out of the 10 cases, 9 cases were operated, one case was lost for follow up. All the operated cases had good results with uneventful follow up period. Prompt diagnosis of RSOV with early aggressive medical stabilization and surgical repair is recommended for excellent long term prognosis and outcome
