Abstract
The article is devoted to the less-known pages of the history of the North-Eastern Archaeological and Ethnographic Institute in Kazan. On the basis of archival documents, the history of NEAEI formation is recreated, its formation and activities are analyzed. The Institute was established in February, 1917, transformed under the name of Oriental Academy at the end of 1920, and in the autumn of 1922, it merged with the Kazan University Humanities Department and the local teacher training institute to form the unified Oriental Pedagogical Institute. Particular attention is paid to teaching Archeology in the latter. From the very beginning the Institute faced with the complexity of educational process organization at the Archaeology Department. General and special courses were conducted by N.F. Vysotsky, B.F. Adler, S.P. Shestakov, M.G. Khudyakov. But the system of teaching Archaeology in the NEAEI was not established. The institute administration lacked the vision of the structure and methods of teaching archaeological disciplines, the list of them being constantly modified and complemented. Archaeology had not been a priority in the NEAEI, although the majority of the students had been enrolled with the Archaeology Department.
