The article concerns the concept of import substitution, the need for this strategy in Russia in the current geopolitical situation, the international experience of the import substitution policy is analyzed, the importance of increasing own scientific and technological potential of the regions as a vital factor in implementing the import substitution strategy is emphasized, as well as the necessity of improvement of the innovation activity, enhancing the investment activity and development of import substitution information support.
