Abstract

Considered the preservation of the national memory about Taras Shevchenko in the ideology and activities of Ukrainian communities, clubs and political societies on the Upper Dnieper Area in the late ХІХth century. Shows the activities with decorating and visiting the grave of Kobzar, the traditional Shevchenko's anniversaries, reading and disseminating works of Shevchenko, which were in «olds», «youths» Ukrainian сommunity and tarasivtsi's. Noted that this was done not only in the provincial centers – Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, Poltava, and began to penetrate into the provincial hinterland. Evidence of this was, for example, the activities of the Ukrainian group in Alexandria. Noted that the commemoration of Taras Shevchenko was an important manifestation of the formation of Ukrainian national identity and consciousness in the late ХІХth century, when near the national culturista on the Upper Dnieper Area began to show itself, a new Ukrainian political movement.
