The main functions of Consulate and features of the Japanese Imperial Consulate in Odessa (1889–1910)

Abstract

Japanese Consulate in Odessa was an important part of foreign missions in Japan. Its existence coincided with a period of transformation of the Tokyo government's position on the international scene. Therefore, for example, the consulat's activity can follow the relationship between increasing functions and strengthening the authority of Japan. The base functions of the Japanese Consulate in Odessa are in the Russo-Japanese Treaty of Trade and Navigation on 1895 and the reports of members from the Japanese mission in Odessa, stored in the Japanese Center for Asian Historical Records. Activity of consular missions intended to protect the interests of the country and countrymen. It concerned and the Japanese mission in the south of the Russian Empire. Several functions of the Consulate had to serve the achievement of the main goal. According to the agreement of 1895 recognized the right for a mission to help the courts of the country if it will be necessary. By the assurance the first leader of the Japanese Consulate in Odessa A. Raksheyeva the main function of the institution was development of trade relations between Japan and Russia. Also devoted much attention to the consulate the gathering of information that was different in nature and content. Contributing to the development of economic ties the consulate was engaged cultural and informational activities organized exhibition of Japanese goods in Odessa. Summing up, it should be noted that the structural branching of functions of the Japanese Consulate in Odessa, demonstrates its importance for the Tokyo government.
