The history of musical instrumentarium covers several millennia. Studying music instruments is of great interest in terms of not only the material culture, but also studying human world perception. The certain traditions established, tone rows, performance abilities reflect the aesthetic taste, regularities of the music thinking, as the process of music instrumentarium appearance and evolution related to changes occurred in the sphere of society's world perception. In the scientific article, the process of evolution of string music instruments, which always were notable for their bright, saturated colouring and were close to human voice, is considered. Complex and long way of their development has led to appearance of different types of many-stringed instruments, such as mizafa, yatagan, nuzxa, naxiy, muganiy, shaxrud, mugna, kalin, kanun etc. The abovementioned instruments are described in east papers of the Orient thinkers, their pictures can be seen on the medieval miniatures. However, unfortunately not all music instruments survived, some of them gradually disappeared or were improved. The other part found the new form of being and increased its own expressiveness. In the modern musical practice, one of such instruments is an Uzbek music instrument chang. Chang is dulcimer-like instrument, which has unique beautiful timbre, as well as great performance opportunities. Since it is stringed according to the source of sound, and percussion according to the sound extraction manner, it falls into the group of string-percussion instruments. In scientific article the method, based on the study of design, material, way of fabrication and performance opportunities of the instrument, is applied, which promotes understanding of the whole history process of the development of the music instrument. The study is based on the fact that music instrument and performance culture are closely connected.
