Abstract

Abstract : This study was designed to compare the efficacy of preemptive Gabapentin and Pregabalin with respect to preoperative anxiety score , intraoperative sedation , hemodynamic stability , duration of postoperative analgesia and side effects METHODS This prospective randomized study was conducted in sixty patients scheduled for inguinal surgeries under spinal anaesthesia. Sixty patients in ASA I and II with age ranging from 30-60 years , with no history of drug allergy or any contraindication to spinal anaesthesia were included . patients were randomly allotted into two groups of 30 each Group G(Gabapentin 800mg) and Group P (Pregabalin 300mg). The study drugs , Gabapentin and Pregabalin were given orally one hour before the planned spinal procedure. Preoperative anxiety score was assessed by visual analogue scale . The intraoperative sedation was assessed by Ramsay sedation score and postoperative pain was assessed by visual analogue scale. The duration of postoperative analgesia was calculated from the time of spinal anaesthesia to the first dose of rescue analgesia. RESULTS There was significant reduction in anxiety (P0.0001) in both the groups in the preoperative period after institution of the drug and also the reduction is significant between two groups (P0.0001). Mean blood pressure , Heart rate , SPO2 and Respiratory rate were similar (P0.05) in two groups. Sedation in group G was 1.030.18 whereas in group P was 2.370.49 ( significant P0.0001). Total postoperative analgesia in group G was 232.76.3min whereas in group P was 459.112.1min ( significant P0.0001). No side effects were noted. CONCLUSION Gabapentin and Pregabalin , both have been effective in prolongation of post-spinal analgesia , pregabalin more than Gabapentin .
