Abstract

Present study was done to see the protective effect of Thymoquinone against the Antitubercular drug induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Thymoquinone reduced serum levels of hepatic enzymes SGPT, SGOT, ALP and also of bilirubin when administered in dose of 5 mg as well as 10 mg. High doses was found to reduce the liver enzymes and bilirubin to greater extent than 5 mg dose. It might be due to the role of Thymoquinone as antioxidant and due to the preservation of intracellular glutathione or may be related to inhibition of thromboxane B2 production. Present study throws light on usefulness of Thymoquinone in protection against ATT induced liver injury. This might prove useful for combating the serious hepatic adverse effects of ATT regimen without eliminating the use of standard first line drugs.
