Abstract

Activatied method of charcoal determinesthe specific usage of activated charcoal Generally there recognize two activation methods top produce activated charcoal:physical and chemical methods. This research was carriedout to identify structureand componentsof charcoaland activated charcoa. lfrom candlenutshell Candlenutshell (Aleurites moiuccana Willd)was carbonisedin drum-keyln to producecharcoal, and then the product was activatedin electrical retort by applying thermalactivator with heating duration of 120 minutesat temperatureof 550' C, 650' C and 750' C respectively.For futher investigationt,he heats at 750' C was chased, combined with steamactivatorlly heating duration of 90 minutesand 120 minutes. Fungsional group,crystallinityandporosity of candlen«:shell, charcoaland activatedcharcoalssample test were characterizedlly Fourier Trans form Infra Red (FTIR), X-Ray Difractometer (XRD) and ScanningElectron Microscope (SEM), and chemicalcompoundson sample test of candlenutshell,. charcoaland activated charcoals identified by using Pyrolisis Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer(Py-GCMS).In turnedout that activationprocess brought about changing in fungtional group pattern,increasingin crystallinity, poreopening and chemical compound reduction. The higher activation temperature ecaused thein creasein crystallinity,pore diameterand chemical compound reduction. The activation by steam resulted activated charcoal with relatively cleaner pore.
