Abstract

Openness and collaboration process facilitated by digital information, production and distribution technologies enables new ways to project, share, access and produce by potentializing several social, economic and environmental configurations to arise. Access to these technologies promotes the formation of makerspace ecosystem encouraging practices of collaborative projects and participative learning, allowing dissemination of innovation. This paper aims to explore the current development of maker movement in Brazil attempting to establish location, typology and practices in localized physical spaces guided by a community dedicated to digital production that focus on the development of tangible material results. Reflection occurs by cross-checking the collected information on the issues through literature and triangulation between primary publicly available sources, survey and visits to some makerspaces. The results indicates the existence of approximately 58 fablabs and makerspaces in Brazil to the current date, being most of them hosted or free and just a few of them independent keeping their own characteristics and reaching different user groups. It follows that existing typology to determine the characteristics of these spaces does not cover all the settings that are emerging in Brazil.
