ANDROGYNY OF HOUSE SPIRITS: GENDER SPECIFIC OF KHATNYK, DOMOVYK

The article is aimed at studying the gender specific nature of the image of khatnyk/domovyk (a protective house spirit). An overview of the rituals and beliefs concerning house spirits is provided. The genesis of khatnyk/domovyk is examined as well as his connection with the ancient gods, the earthly and the heavenly fire. Feminine and masculine features in the image of khatnyk/domovyk are studied. The category of androgyny is viewed as a characteristic feature of the primal forefather gods related to the image of khatnyk/domovyk.
