The article considers the pragmatic aspect of using the comparison technique in creating a joke. The material of the study is the phraseological units used to create a humorous expression in works on medicine. When creating a text, the writer compares it with other objects that are familiar and understandable to the ad- dressee. The purpose of such a comparison is the specification of the described object, the refinement of its char- acteristics without resorting to descriptive means of language.
