Examination of a Method for Determining Web News Suitable for NIE using Features of NIE Worksheets

NIE (Newspaper in Education) is an educational approach that utilizes newspaper as teaching materials in classes. It is being implemented in elementary schools and junior high schools mainly, however, adjusting time in general classes, choosing suitable articles and preparing support materials for NIE increase teachers’ loads. The purpose of this study is to construct a Web news recommendation system for elementary school teachers. This paper analyzes articles in NIE worksheets based on the categories and the readability, and proposes a method for determining Web news suitable as teaching materials of NIE in elementary schools.
