Abstract

The social, political and cultural changes occurred after the military coup carried out on 12 September 1980 in Turkey, have also affected the concepts of art and the artists' forms of making art. The important changes that started in the field of art in the 1980s, which constituted a turning point in Turkey, led to new artistic formations and transformations. Art has entered into an intellectual process that includes concepts such as expression, questioning and giving messages. The female artists of the 1980s have been questioner and critical and they produced ideas through their work. Communal, political and social discourses constituted the main axis of their art production. Each artist used materials and techniques according to her own discourse in her art. This was a period in which the female artists started to use the language of contemporary art as a means of expression in their artistic production
