Abstract

The article reviews the possibility of using international words in teaching Spanish to Russian students as a second foreign language after English. In today‟s world international vocabulary promotes better understanding between representatives of different nations, makes it possible to break language barriers, and contributes to the formation of a multilingual personality. The topic is relevant as there is a need for contrastive exercises aimed at appropriate use of international lexis, its successful transfer between languages, avoiding interference in the process of using international words, especially when studying several foreign languages. A set of contrastive exercises worked out by the author illustrates the differences in using international words in English, Spanish and Russian languages. The purpose is to teach students how to deal with the orthography and meaning of international words. Doing the suggested exercises, students learn to see the differences and similarities in using international words, single out morphological elements (affixes), and identify their grammatical meaning. They learn to model Spanish words proceeding from their English equivalents. Moreover, the article describes some cases when international vocabulary can cause false analogies. The research allowed working out some teaching techniques based on international vocabulary used in the three languages.
