Abstract

This article is devoted to the translation of scientific and technical compound terms, the structure of which is formed on the basis of the most widely used English words and elements of the Latin and Greek lan- guages. The article shows similarities and differences in the translation of terms, reveals changes in their struc- ture, pronunciation, ways of formation of scientific and technical terms, and also outlines the prevailing aspects of foreign language elements and words in scientific and technical texts. When analyzing terms, much attention is paid to the etymology of words, since many terms have retained their meaning up to this day, and the mean- ings of some terms have led to minor changes. A special role is also given to the spelling of scientific and tech- nical terms, which is one of the most actual issues in terminology today. In addition, the percentage share of compound English terms as well as the share of hybrid terms, borrowings, and calques in the translation of terms into Uzbek and Turkish, is presented here. All terms were selected from “Materials for Engineers and Techni- cians” – the scientific and technical literature
