Abstract

A rare case of an open posterior partial articular fracture of both femoral condyles with an ipsilateral comminuted fracture of the patella is presented. Internal fixation of the femur was done using 4 AO (Mathys Medical Ltd, Bettlach, Switzerland), 6.5mm cancellous lag screws that were inserted in the posterior to anterior direction. The patella was treated with cerclage wiring. Knee stiffness that followed immobilization was treated with gentle manipulation under anaesthesia. At 18 months the patient developed anterior knee pain, which required treatment. At almost nine years after injury the patient had normal painless knee function with no disability.
