KNOWLEDGE ATTITUDE PRACTICE OF RETINOPATHY DUE TO DIABETES MELLITUS AMONG DIABETIC PATIENTS ATTENDING A TEACHING HOSPITAL

Abstract

INTRODUCTION- It is reported that 4 of world population is affected by diabetes mellitus, among whom 50 has diabetic retinopathy. While diabetic retinopathy cannot be prevented, its complications can be prevented by early detection and treatment. Hence awareness among the diabetic patients about diabetic retinopathy and its complications is important for timely utilisation of services and therefore prevent blindness. AIM - To study the knowledge attitude practice of diabetic retinopathy among diabetic patients attending a teaching hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS - It is a prospective study involving a convenient sample of 100 Diabetic patients attending ophthalmology OPD. They are interviewed with a validated questionnaire testing their knowledge , attitude, practice of diabetic retinopathy by a single interviewer after obtaining their consent. Data analysed statistically. INCLUSION CRITERIA- Diabetic Patients attending ophthalmology OPD.EXCLUSION CRITERIA - very ill patients, patients not willing to take part in this study. RESULTS- In this study a statistically significant association between duration of diabetes and practice patterns of diabetic patients was found. Misconception regarding treatment of diabetic retinopathy is prevalent in this study population emphasizing the need for more health education programmes and awareness camps.
