Abstract

The article offers a general overview of the contribution of women into the field of literary translation in Soviet Ukraine in the 1920s-1930s. It briefly reports on their sociocultural backgrounds, political and community activities, as well as personal histories, in the spotlight of governmental regulation of literary expression. The discussion focuses on 1) the reasons for the choice of the source-language texts and authors, 2) the scope and quality of translations, 3) the sociological and esthetic analysis of translated works by the best critics of that time, and 4) the dynamics and general tendencies in translation strategies, viewed from the history-of-communism perspectiv
