Abstract

He Prophet (s) used to recite the revealed verses to his compani-ons an get them scribed, as vwell. The companions used to memo-rize them according to their abilities and write them down. This shows us that the Quran reached us these to ways. The were no scribal markings in the Quran that has been scribed by the Prop-het, nor in thi Quran combined by Abu Bakr and in the Quran copied by Uthman. This enabled different ways of certain letters and words. The fact that there is no clear indication in religious soureces or any narration fort he meaning of “seven” in the famous report saying that “the Quran is revealed in seven letters” complicates the issue. There is no doubt that the issue of “seven letters” is a license and ease for those who believe in it. This did not only make it easier for those who become Muslims, also provided the ground fort he dissemination of Islam. This issue should be understood and evaluated in this manner. This article evaluates this issue in this direction especially by looking at the approaches and the analyses existing in the introductions of the classical Tafsirs.
