Abstract

Nowadays, some of ready-mixed concrete manufacture use water storage in producing concrete. The used of water storage is likely to be contaminated with silt and impurities that may affect water quality and may result in poor quality concrete. Therefore, a water filter tool using a surfactant filter cloth was proposed to filter the water storage to ensure that the water used in the production of concrete is improve from silt and impurities. The purpose of this study are to study the quality of water storage used in concrete manufacturing plant, propose and produce water filter to treat water storage and test the strength of concrete. Water quality test that involved were hydrogen ion concentration test (pH), turbidity testing and biochemical oxygen demand tests (BOD5). On the other hand, cube test was performed to determine the compressive strength of the concrete for three types of water (filtered water, storage water and tap water). After all the results were analysed, it was found that the quality of the water storage did not reach the criteria of standard water that would have to be in the concrete mix. Therefore this study proposed a water filter to improve the water quality and from the results, it was found that the use of water filter was helpful in improving water quality. Meanwhile from the cube test results, storage water concrete had a compressive strength of 17.42 N/mm2 while for filtered water concrete was improved to 19.45 N/mm2 . The results obtained indirectly have reached the purpose of this study. Therefore, the use of water in concrete mixtures should be taken into account as it affects the strength of concrete and would have a great impact on building construction.
