Abstract

The researchers sought the instructional efficacy of phonics on pupil's interest in reading. Anon-equivalent control group quasi-experimental research design was adopted using 116 primary two pupils as study participants. A properly validated and trial-tested English Language Reading Interest Scale (ELRIS) was used for data collection. The items of the ELRIS demonstrated a good internal consistency reliability index of .84. The duration of the treatment sessions was five weeks. A mean statistical tool was used to answer the research question while analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypothesis. It was revealed that the phonics approach had a significant (p< .05) effect on pupils' interest in reading. This finding implicates pupils' career choice in Engineering in that as the pupils' interest in reading is enhanced, they will be able to think of picking a career in Engineering education through effective reading.
