Qunatification of Plaque Creatinine Levels in Healthy Gingivitis and Chronic Periodontitis Subjects

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory state characterized by persistent inflammation, annihilation of connective tissue and alveolar bone. Creatinine, 2-Amino-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-ol an organic compound of low molecular weight 113 dalton is a nitrogenous end products of musclecreatine catabolism. It is distributed throughout total body water. Creatinine is present not only in serum and erythrocytes but also in all bodily fluid. Creatinine in plaque seems to capture the host response to periodontopathogens. Study regarding Creatinine in periodontal disease will provide new opportunities in diagnosis and treatment. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To quantify and compare levels of plaque Creatinine level in healthy, gingivitis and chronic periodontitis subjects and compare it with bleeding on probing, gingival index, plaque index, pocket probing depth and clinical attachment level. METHODOLOGY: 120 subjects were divided into 3 groups: 40 healthy 40 gingivitis and 40chronic periodontitis. Plaque samples of patients were collected after obtaining duly signed consent and analyzed by using liquixx Creatinine kit. Statistical analysis was done by Mann whitney U test and Spearmanscorelation test. RESULTS: A statistically significant increase in plaque Creatinine levels was found in chronic periodontitis subjects compared to healthy and gingivitis subjects. Clinical parameters were positively correlated with increasing Creatinine levels. CONCLUSION: Intracellular enzymes are released from damaged cells of periodontal tissue. Creatinine can be used as reliable biochemical markers for functional condition of periodontal tissues and therapeutic intervention. KEY WORDS- Creatinine, periodontitis, biochemical marker
