Abstract

the objectives of this research were to find out the types of gesture and the gesture dominantly used by the teacher in EFL (English as a foreign language) classroom based on the types of gesture according to Ekman and Friesen. This research employed descriptive qualitative research design to analyze the teachers gesture in teaching EFL at the English department, language and literature faculty of State University of Makassar. The subject of this research was the lecturer at the fourth semester of speaking class of State University of Makassar in academic year 2014/2015. The researcher selected one class to be a sample directly. The class was selected by the researcher was class B that comprises 35 students. Video recording was used to gather the pictures of the teachers gesture. The result shows that (1) the teacher used all of the types of gestures that classified by Ekman& Friesen (1969) in teaching EFL classroom. The researcher found 18 images which were identified as illustrators gesture, 1 image which was identified as regulators gesture and also1 image for emblems and two images which were identified as affect display, (2) the gesture dominantly used by the teacher in teaching EFL classroom was Illustrators gesture dealing with the using of natural hand and body gestures that accompany speech.
