Abstract

Bâyezid II Complex was built in 1505 by Bâyezid II. The purpose of establishing the social complex was to serve the community in social areas such as education, culture and especially religion. Bâyezid II Social Complex, which is the second selâtin social complex of Istanbul, has provided significant services to the city for centuries with its service units including mosque, madrasah, imaret, primary school, caravansary, bathhouse and rest house. However, the accounting records reveal that the complex did not restrict its services with the region and the city where it was built in, but also provided financial support to various institutions such as Avlonya Castle and Dimetoka Dungeon, which were located in distant cities. These institutions, which received financial support from the Bayezid II Complex, constitute the main concern of the present study. Among the institutions that have been identified in accounting records, there are some institutions which appeared in the resources but cannot survive thus far, as well as other institutions which lacks any form of information. This study, which identifies the institutions that received financial support from the social complex, provides also significant information about certain institutions that have so far stayed unknown.
